The Kai Dog is also known as Tora Inu, Tiger Dog, Kai Ken and Kai Inu. It is a Spitz type dog native to Japan. This breed is very rare even in its country of origin, Japan!. It is the purest of all the six Japanese Spitz type breed and has never been cross bred with other breeds. This medium size breed is an outstanding hunting dog with its legendary toughness, energy and ferociousness. This dog stands between 18-22 inches and weighs between 25-40 lbs. It comes with a medium size head and broad forehead. Muzzle is medium length and slightly thick and pointed. Small dark brown eyes are triangular in shape with pricked, triangular and drawn forward ears. This sturdy dog has short back with broad loin and tucked up belly. Chest is deep with well sprung ribs. Thick long tail reaches to the hock. It is carried as curled over the back or in sickle position. This breed comes with a straight and harsh outer coat and soft, dense undercoat. Coat colours range from red brindle to black brindle. This is an ancient dog breed and it is believed that its ancestors, the Tora Inu, were present some 4000 years ago. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC.
The coat comes in various shades of brindle (tiger stripes). The red is the Aka-tora, the black is the Kuro-tora and between them, the Chu-tora. Puppies are born a solid color and their brindle markings develop as they age, sometimes taking as long as five years before fully showing.
This breed has a double coat. The top coat is medium length, harsh to touch and straight while the under coat is short and dense.
The Kai Dog is a very loyal, loving and intelligent breed. It is very human oriented and makes a strong bond with its family and owner. An unconditional lover, the dog does need love and appreciation from its family and owners. With its gentle and calm temperament, it makes a very good family dog. As a playful breed, the dog loves company of children and enjoy being a great playmate of them. It gets along well with other dogs and pets in the family. Besides its outstanding hunting skills, the Kai Dog makes an excellent watch and guard dog as well. This dog is wary of strangers and can be trained into an excellent watch and guard dog that can distinguish between a family member and an intruder. Otherwise quiet, the dog will bark only to signal something unusual. This highly intelligent breed is easy to train. Socialization should start from young age and the dog should be exposed to different people, places and situations to avoid the dog from becoming shy and fearful. The Kai Dog is relatively inactive indoors and can fit into apartment life if the owner is ready to provide necessary exercise and playing time to this dog. A well trained and socialized Kai dog will make an excellent family companion, watch and guard dog and an exceptional hunter.
As a self-cleaning breed, the Kai dog does not require lots of maintenance. It is free from doggy smell and would need to be bathed only when necessary. Its medium length coat should be thoroughly brushed 2-3 times a week to keep it clean and healthy.
This intelligent breed is highly trainable with positive reinforcement training methods. It is a fast learner and can be taught simple tricks easily. The dog will follow training routines with a firm and confident owner.
Although the Kai Dog is relatively inactive indoor, this breed does need ample amount of exercise and playing time. It should be taken to daily walks and provided with playing time in a safe, secure and open area to keep it fit and happy.
