BREED DETAILS

GENERAL
The Native American Shepherd is a designer dog mixed between the Native American Indian Dog and the Belgium Shepherd. They are commonly used for herding livestock. Some are great with ball or as Frisbee retrievers, great swimmers, therapy dogs, search & rescue dogs, able to carry a back pack, pull a load on a sled or just be the all around best friend and companion.

COLOR
The coat color of this breed varies as their Native American Indian Dog parent can come in all coat colors including brindle or spotted with 3 distinct hair coat lengths. Their Belgium sheepdog parent, however, can come in basic black with a slight mixture of white on the paws or white spot on the chest.

COAT
The Native American Shepherds have a soft, glistening coat. Some may have the shorter denser two layered coat.

PERSONALITY
Native American Shepherd is a happy-go-lucky dog who is always hunting for someone to pet or love on them. They are great companion dogs. They are very playful, energetic, delightful, affectionate and friendly. They can go along well with children and other dogs but needs trained well and monitored as they can be strong and aggressive.

CARE
These breeds is considered to be hypoallergenic and sheds only once a year. They require a light brushing about twice annually as they only shed minimal and bathing should only be done when necessary.

TRAINING
These breed is highly intelligent and are very easy to train. Early socialization and obedience training is recommended. Training should be with firmness, consistency, fairness and positive reinforcement. They do not respond to harsh and heavy-handed methods.

ACTIVITY
The Native American Shepherds are normally active indoors. They can suit in an apartment living but needs to be given sufficient exercises to burn off their energies and tire them out. It would be best if they are given a large yard to roam around. Frequent daily long exercises and leashed outdoor activities are advised.
