The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a dog breed of the scent hound type. Pronounced as 'Peh-TEET BAS-et Griff-ON Ven-Dee-en', these dogs are bred to trail hares in bramble filled terrain of the Vend�e district of France. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is also known to be called Small Vendeen Basset, Petit Basset griffon vend�en and PBGV. It is one of the many small varieties of the French hound that can be traced to the 16th century and to the Griffon Vend�en, his larger, more powerful ancestor.
These dogs are highly intelligent but are very strong headed. Thus, patience and consistency is a must for training these dogs. Crate training is also recommended as house breaking this dogs can be a bit difficult for their stubborn nature. The dog likes to bark so training should include controlling their barking habits. The dog's energy and stamina should be drained on a daily basis. They would enjoy a good long walk and exercise every day. Avoid taking their leash off in an unsecured area as their hunting instincts could kick in anytime. When this happens, they will run off without looking back. The Petits are escape artists that they could get away when they feel the need to. As a hunting dog, the dog is driven by their nose.
