The Perro Cimarron is a large size molossor type Uruguay dog with strong, well muscled and compact body. Declared National Dog of its country of origin, this dog breed is very popular in Uruguay. This dog is also known as Cimarron, Uruguayan Cimarron, Cimarron Creole, Maroon Dog, Cerro Largo Dog, Cimarr�n Uruguayo and Cimarron Dog. Though tagged as 'Cimmaron' which means wild or untamed, this dog is in fact, docile and gentle to its human family. It is highly valued and used as wild boar hunter and guardian of the house but with a balanced temperament, this dog is equally well suited as family companion.
Uncertainty prevails over the origination of this dog but it is believed that it descended from the dogs which were introduced by Spanish and Portuguese invaders. These dogs crossed among themselves and through natural selection, only the fittest, strongest and most clever dogs survived. This is the origination of Perro Cimarron dog. Noticing their abilities, these dogs were domesticated by inhabitants of that time and were progressively trained to become excellent hunting, herding and guard dog.
This large and muscular dog stands between 22.24.5 inches and weighs about 75-99 lbs. It comes with a wide skull and medium length muzzle. Medium size dark eyes are almond shaped with inquisitive expression. The nose is broad and black. The dog has medium length, strong and muscular neck. It has a compact body with either level or saddled topline, well defined withers, short and slightly arched strong loin and deep, broad chest with well sprung ribs. Forelegs are straight with well boned forearms. The hind legs are parallel and straight with well developed muscled upper thighs. This gives the dog immense power. Tail is thick, medium set, reaching the hock. At rest carried low. In motion carried horizontally or slightly upward The thick and supple skin is covered with short smooth hair that lies close to the body. Coat color can be brindle or any shades of fawn, with or without mask.
This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI.
