The Schnauzer is a breed of dog that originated in Germany in 15th and 16th century. The term 'Schnauzer' means snout in German and this breed is given this name for its distinct beard on the snout. Schnauzers are terrier type dogs but have less terrier temperament in them.
There are three types of Schnauzers, the Giant(24 inches, 55-80 lbs), the Standard(18 inches, 30-45 lbs) and the Miniature(12 inches, 14-20 lbs). The Giant and Standard Schnauzers are working breeds. Standard Schnauzers have been used as ratters and guard dogs while Giant Schnauzers have been assigned cattle herding and guarding roles. Miniature Schnauzers are family pets though they can be used as watch dogs.
