Breed Details

General

The Ainu dog is also known as Hokkaido Dog, Hokkaidoken, Hokka�do, Ainu-Ken and Ainu Inu. It is among the oldest dog breeds in japan. This breed was first bred by indigenous Ainu people to hunt salmon, deer and bear. Despite their strong link with Ainu people, the breed is commonly called Hokkaido by common Japanese people.

This dog is medium in size with a size of 20 inches and weight around 65 pounds. It has a thin, sturdy and muscular body. It has erect ears and small eyes. The forelegs are straight and lean with hindquarters covered with harsh and straight double coat. Coat comes in sesame, brindle, wolf gray, red, brown, white and tan.

Though typically used for hunting purpose, this dog is very faithful to its owners, fearless and brave. Despite a hunting background, it combines its hunting instincts and faithfulness to its owners to become a very good house pet.

This breed is NOT recognized by AKC. It is recognized by FCI, NKC, CKC, APRI, ACR and DRA.

Color

The breed comes in different colours like sesame, wolf gray, red, brown, white, tan and brindle among other colours.

Coat

This breed has a double coat with outer coat being long, straight and stiff and an under coat that is short, soft and compact.

Personality

The Ainu dog is naturally wild and powerful, making it an excellent guard dog. Being protective of its owner, the dog is fearless and courageous. They have been used as sledge dogs and can withstand extreme cold weather. A unique trait of this dog is a built-in sense of direction. It can return to its master no matter how great the distance. In spite of its wild nature and hunting background, the breed is well behaved and gentle as family pets. They are very good with children but early age socialization is necessary. This dog should not be let to run free around other animals. The owners of this dog need to display proper pack leader skills or this dog can become head-strong. With proper socialization, this dog is a very good family pet, great watch and guard dog and excellent hunting companion.

Care

The coat requires regular brushing.

Training

This dog is a fast learner. It can be trained with calm, confident and firm training sessions. Consistency in training is a must.

Activity

Like all working dogs, the Ainu dog also needs frequent physical and mental activities. Long daily walks and opportunity to run will keep its energy levels under control. The dog is best suited to homes with a large yard where it can play and run.
