Breed Details

General

The Alaskan Klee Kai is similar in appearance to an Alaskan Husky as these dogs were primarily developed to create a smaller version of the Alaskan Husky dogs although it physically resembles with Siberian Husky. This breed has a wedge-shaped head with striking masked face. The ears are pricked, the body length is slightly longer than its height. This dog is available in three sizes that are toy (up to 13 cm), miniature (up to 15 inches) and standard (up to 17 inches).

The Alaskan Klee Kai is loving, highly intelligent and curious dog just like its larger version, the Alaskan Husky. They are very friendly and docile with their family but reserve and wary around unknown people. This breed needs a confident and experienced owner to handle it well.

The Alaskan Klee Kai dog is NOT recognized by AKC, however UKC recognizes this dog as separate breed.

Color

This breed is found in three colour combinations. Black & white, red & white and gray & white. Some Alaskan Klee Kai dogs are also found in solid white colour but this colour is not recognized by the UKC.

Coat

The breed comes in two coat types, the standard coat and full coat.

Personality

The Alaskan Klee Kai dogs are highly intelligent, curious and very active. They are alert and attentive to their surroundings and are naturally wary and suspicious of strangers. This makes them excellent watch dogs. The dog has high prey drive and needs to be very well socialized and trained to live with smaller animals like cats and rabbits. The dog is loving and eager to please its master. It can get along well with children if properly trained. It does not like being mistreated and is not very tolerant of such activities so the children should be told not to mishandle this dog or it may retaliate by nipping or biting. The dog can live in an apartment but would ideally be suited in a house with a small yard. This breed is highly intelligent and can take part in many dog sports like agility and obedience.

Care

The Alaskan Klee Kai's coat is easy to take care. Brushing the coat once in a week is enough to keep it clean. The breed is naturally very clean and only occasionally needs to be bathed. It does not have 'doggy smell'. This breed is an average shedder.

Training

The Alaskan Klee Kai dogs are very smart and intelligent as well as eager to please the master. This results in a dog that is highly trainable. Training should start from puppyhood and the owner must establish himself as the packleader. Set the rules for the dog to follow and then never let the dog break those rules even if it is young. This way, these dogs will follow every rule set for them.

Activity

Though smaller in size than their cousin dogs, the Alaskan and the Siberian huskies, the Alaskan Klee Kai dogs possess the same energy levels. These dogs need lots of physical activity to keep themselves busy and in the process, burn out excessive energy levels. They are relatively inactive indoor and would ideally need to be taken for long walks day as well as sufficient playing time in open areas.
