Breed Details

General

The American Allaunt is a large and very strong dog. It can stand up to 26-29 inches and weighs anywhere between 100 to 150 pounds when fully matured. The dog has a muscular body with a broad head, muscular jaws and large muzzle. The body is longer than taller with thick bones and straight legs. The wide chest gives the dog a royal and graceful look.

This large dog is a multipurpose utility. It can be a great family pet, excellent hunting companion, natural protector of the family, excellent watch and guard dog and even can take part in dog sports like weight pulling. This dog is NOT recognized by AKC.

Color

They are found in many colours. Some common colours include black, brown, brindle with or without markings.

Coat

The coat is short and thick.

Personality

The American Allaunt dog is an even-tempered and very friendly dog for its family and owners. It gets along well with all the family members including children. It can also get along with other dogs. This naturally protective dog is very confident and courageous. Together with its loyal character, it will defend its family, property and possessions till last. The dog is highly intelligent and affectionate. The American Allaunt presents imposing first impression. Its massive size and muscular body together with high speed is a natural deterrent for intruders. This dog makes a great family pet.

Care

The short coat does not require much of grooming.

Training

This highly intelligent dog is very trainable although it will require a confident and calm yet firm trainer. The training should be done in an assertive manner rather than harsh methods.

Activity

The breed needs fair amount of exercise to release its mental and physical energy. A long walk twice a day with some playing and running time is necessary. The dog is ideally suited to house with a yard where it can play and run as it likes.
