The American Black and Tan Coonhound is one of few All-American breed. It is large, strong and determined hunting dog. It has a very keen sense of scent and its hunting abilities largely depend on its ability to track a scent of an animal to its origin. This dog is powerful, agile and alert and is capable of very fast speed.
This large dog can be anywhere between 23 to 27 inches while it may weigh around 50 to 70 pounds. The head of the dog is in proportion to its body which is slightly longer than taller. The muzzle is long and eyes hazel or dark brown in colour. The ears are exceptionally long and set low. The long legs are straight and help the dog achieve maximum speed.
This dog displays loyalty, affection, intelligence and dedication. It is equally praised by hunters and owners as it is a great hunting companion as well as very good family pet. This dog is recognized by AKC, UKC, CKC, APRI, NKC, ACR, DRA and other kennel clubs and associations.

This dog is mellow, amiable , calm and obtrusive indoors. Being friendly with all members of the family, the dog is patient with children. It generally listens to its master and behaves well. This dog needs a confident and assertive master who can make the dog realize that he is superior to the dog. It can get along with other dogs in the family very well as the American Black and Tan Coonhound is accustomed to working in a peck but they can become aggressive around strange and unknown dogs. Early age socialization is a must for this dog.
The coat requires brushing twice a week. The ears should be checked for infection. This dog should never be left off leashed in an open and unsafe area as it will take after any interesting scent.
