Breed Details

General

The American Bulldog is known to be devoted, affectionate and lovable. They are best described as a hardy, athletic, all-purpose working dog. They are also known to be a loving family companion, having a good relationship with children and other pets, yet at the same time, fearlessly determined.

It has known to display heroic acts of courage in protecting its master. The American Bulldog has also been used to hunt everything from squirrel to bear, and has been trained to drive cattle and guard stock from predators. The American Bulldog should be evaluated as a working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportions to how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work.

Color

These breeds are common in white, pied, or up to 90% color; brindle or red patches, red as defined as any shade of tan and brown or reddish-brown.

Coat

The coat of these breed is short, close and stiff to the touch.

Personality

The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks requires a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaw. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or human intruder. They are good with children and even with other pets raised with them.

Care

Brush coat with a firm bristle brush or rubber mitt and bathe only when necessary. Puppies should have early socialization. These breeds is known to be very healthy and hardy. Some strains have hip dysplasia. Mast cell tumors are also more common.

Training

American Bulldogs are easy to train with their high average intelligence. Behavioral problems with these breed are common. Initially, they are stubborn in training but they soon respond to their master's commands and prove to be endlessly faithful companions.

Activity

These breeds are active indoors and will need above average exercises. American Bulldogs are working dogs that needs to move around and accomplish tasks. They probably do not best fit in an apartment. They need daily walks, room to run and lots of fresh air to maintain a healthy mind and body.
