Breed Details

General

The American Mastiff (Panja) were originally developed to guard the property and keep all strangers away. They were intended to be intimidating. They were recognized by DRA in 1996 and since then the dog became a family companion.

This large dog is strong and muscular with curious and alert expressions. This working dog has a muscular, athletic body. The chest is wide , limbs muscular, straight and well-boned. The head is broad and ears cropped. It has a docked tail and dew claws typically removed. The coat is flat and medium in length.

Color

The American Mastiff (Panja) comes in different colours. Acceptable colours include black and brown.

Coat

The breed displays a medium length flat coat. It tends to grow an undercoat in winter which protects the dog from cold. The breed sheds minimal.

Personality

This natural guard dog is also an excellent family pet, being very loyal, gentle and devoted to its family. The dog is very patient and gentle with children, specially more if raised with them from puppyhood or socialized well. It also gets along well with other pets like cats, dogs and non-canine animals. This intelligent and understanding dog is instinctively very protective of its family and property. It feels it is its responsibility to protect everything around its surroundings. The dog can easily get bored and needs to be occupied with something to do.

Care

The coat of this breed sheds minimal except for shedding season. It does not require any special grooming and brushing the coat once in a while, preferably weekly, would remove dead hair from the coat. Once a month bathing and thorough rubbing should be enough to keep the coat in top condition.

Training

The American Mastiff (Panja) dogs are strong-willed and would need a strong, firm and consistent trainer to train them. This breed would need a trainer who can show true pack leader qualities. The dog is not recommended for weak or feeble owners or for persons who do not have experience of a large dog owner. Obedience training is a must for this dog.

Activity

Being a working dog, it requires long daily walks as well as playtime in a secure area. This breed requires daily walking and playing time.
