The Ariege Pointing Dog (also known as Braque de l'Ari�ge or Ariege Pointer) is a scent hound and a transcendent gun dog. They hunt by scent and not by speed or sight. The dogs of this breed are large in size with a height and weight of 22-26 inches and 55-60 pounds. The breed is proportioned dog with large drop ears. The muzzle is medium length. The hanging low tail is very short. The legs are medium length and strong. The dog has a short coat with primary white colour.
This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by UKC and FCI.
This dog has primarily white colour that is sometimes speckled with Orange, Liver or chestnut.
The coat is short and easy to groom.
This dog is specially used for hunting purposes and is accustomed to large open areas. It is a highly energetic dog that is best suited to be a hunting dog more than being a family pet although it will make a good family dog as well. The dog is docile, energetic, very quick and independent. It is trainable with firm and consistent trainer. The dog can make a good house pet if it is provided enough playing and running space. It is very unsuitable for urban apartment life or lazy owners. It will live best with families in rural areas and that use this dog's hunting skills.
The breed is generally very healthy. The coat requires regular brushing.
Accustomed to working on its own during hunting, the Ariege Pointing Dog is independent in nature and can become willful during training. The owner should display true pack leader qualities by being confident, calm yet firm and assertive to train this dog.
This highly energetic dog needs lots of physical activities. Long walks and playing time in open secure area is must for this breed of dogs.
