Breed Details
General
This medium-sized dog, which originated in France, is used primarily for hunting small game by sight and by driving them towards the waiting hunter. This breed has lean and elongated head without wrinkles. Eyes are dark and gentle while the ears are medium-sized, soft and cone-shaped. Muzzle is medium and slightly tapering. The neck is slender and arched slightly to the chest which is deep and narrow. The dog has straight forelegs and powerful hind legs. Feet are hard and fox-like and tail is slightly curved. The coat of this breed is short and smooth. The Ariegeois can be 55-65 pounds in weight and can be from 22 to 24 inches in height.
This dog is NOT recognized by AKC, however FCI and UKC recognize this dog.
Color
The Ariegeois dogs come in colours of black, brown and white patches, black and white spotted and sometimes all black or brown.
Coat
The coat is short and smooth and is easy to groom.
Personality
This hunting breed is mainly used for hunting hares, deers and boars. It is very energetic and fast dog that can be a very good family pet as well. It is calm and affectionate dog when in the house with its family. It can get along well with other dogs but care should be taken when the dog is around smaller animals as it has a high prey drive. It is an energetic dog that can be a very good family pet.
Care
Grooming is not very difficult for this dog's short and smooth coat.
Training
Training is not very difficult with this calm and serene dog. All the owner has to do is to show true packleader qualities and the dog will follow the orders.
Activity
Despite being a hunting dog, the Ariegeois can be lazy at times. The owner should take this dog for regular play and walking otherwise they can become fat.
