General
The Armant (also known as Ermenti, Egyptien Sheepdog, Hawara and Chien de Berger Egyptien) is a herding and guarding dog that is mostly found in Egypt. A typical Armant dog is 21 to 23 inches and weighs between 50-65 pounds when matured. The dog has a large head, small eyes and deep chest. The muzzle is medium size with small black nose. The long ears can be erect or drop. The coat is long and shaggy/woolly coat that comes in many different colours. The forelegs of this dog are straight and strong with small compact feet. The hind legs are powerful with hocks well bent. The dog has thickly padded arched toed which helps it walk comfortably across rough terrain when herding or guarding. The tail is long and is either curled or docked.
The Armant dog is NOT recognized by AKC.
Color
The Armant dog is found in many colours. Some most common colours for this dog are black, black and tan, grey and grey-yellow variations.
Coat
This breed sports a shaggy/woolly coat that is rough to touch. It needs clipping regularly.
Personality
The Armant is an excellent family as well as herding and watch dog. It has a loyal and fearless temperament and is amicably social. It is very playful, happy and loving dog that is very protective of its family and territory. The Armant dog loves to be loved and will need lots of attention from the owners. This dog is very family oriented and will need atleast one person in the house to avoid destructible behavior resulting from loneliness. It is very gentle and playful with children and will love to play different games with them. This dog can get along well with other dogs and pets after proper socialization and training. The Armant dog is very eager to please its owners. It is intelligent and quick learners. When working, the dog proves to be a fearless herding and protecting dog and will not be intimidated by wolf or other fierce animals. It is very protective of its possessions and will fight till the end to protect its family and territory. The dog is very agile, quick and have well-balanced movements. The Armant dog is great companion dog during walking, jogging, hiking, bicycling and playing and that is the kind of exercise it needs to utilize its high energy levels. The dog is a wonderful animal whether used as family dog or herding dog.
Care
The long shaggy coat needs to be brushed almost daily. The dog should also be bathed regularly to keep it clean.
Training
The Armant dog is very intelligent and eager to please its owners and is highly trainable. The owner or trainer should use gentle but firm methods to train this dog. As with all dogs, socialization with people, places and animals should start early in the puppyhood. The owner should display true leadership qualities and make the dog realize the owner is higher in rank than dog itself.
Activity
Being a working dog, the Armant needs lots of physical activities to keep it fit and happy. It is a great companion during jogging, bicycling, hiking and of course, walking. The dog loves to play games. It is best suited in large open area settings where it can play and run as it wishes. The owner should take the dog for daily long walks as well as provide ample playing time in an open secure area.
