General

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was originated in Australia by the result of crossing between Australian Dingo dog and some European herding dogs. The breed has been used as herding dogs on farms throughout Australia. These dogs have small to medium size, sturdy frames, slightly longer than taller. The medium sized pricked ears are set wide apart on head and oval shaped eyes are medium in size. The muzzle is moderate in length with black nose. The neck is strong and deep muscular chest. Body is level and slopes at the rump. The legs are strong and powerful. The naturally bobtail is the most distinguished feature of this breed. The coat of this dog breed is short to medium with straight, dense and harsh hair.The dog comes in the height from 17 to 20 inches and weight between 35 to 50 pounds.

This breed is not recognized by AKC however ANKC and DRA recognize this dog breed.

Color

The breed has speckled red or speckled blue colour both with possible dark or tan markings.

Coat

The coat of this dog is short to medium in length with straight, harsh and dense hair.

Personality

This working breed has been used for herding sheep and cattle. It is independent, watchful, energetic and free-spirited dog that is docile and obedient to its owners. Though generally friendly, the dog does not require much in the way of cuddling or affection. Despite being tough and resolute, the dog does appreciate praise and good treatment. The dog is sensitive to neglect and isolation and does need to get involved with its family. It is responsive and affectionate to its family but reserved around strangers. The dog's watchful and alert nature makes it an excellent watch dog. The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog is generally good with children it is brought up with but with proper socialization and training, it becomes easily friendly and gentle with all children. This highly intelligent and active dog needs something to do and does not like to be around doing nothing. This working dog will thrive if given a task by its owners.

A bored dog can show undesirable behavior such as herding people by nipping at their heels. It needs a confident and strong owner who knows how to establish himself as this dog's packleader.

With proper training and socialization, this dog makes a very good family and working dog.

Care

The short to medium length coat is very easy to groom as only once or twice a week brushing with hard brush is sufficient to keep the coat clean. Bathe only when necessary.

Training

This dog is not difficult to train. It is responsive to its owners and will be easy to train with a firm hand guiding their way.

Activity

The Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog has incredible stamina and needs lots of room to play and run and tasks to complete. Lack of physical and mental stimulation will result in dog becoming mischievous and destructive. This breed is not suitable for apartment living.

The dog can take part in many dog sports such as agility, obedience, flyball and tracking.
