Breed Details

General

The Basset Artesien Normand is a small size long dog with short legs and long body. The ratio of height with body length is about 5:8. The dog stands firm and balanced. The head is doomed-shaped with moderately long muzzle. The black nose is wide with open nostrils. Eyes are large, dark and oval shape with an expression of calmness and seriousness. The long, supple and delicate ears are set low on the head and should not be above eye-line. The neck is long and sometimes comes with dewlap. Shoulders are muscular and oblique. Short forelegs are heavy boned and are half crooked. Short hind legs are in proportion to forelegs and provide balance to the body. Chest is oval shaped while wide and well-supported back is straight and level. The loins are slightly tucked up. Feet of this dog are elongated and oval shaped. The long tail is quite thick at the base and tapering towards the end.The Basset Artesien Normand has a short and smooth coat that comes in tricolor, white and fawn. The dog has height and weight between 12-14 inches and 25-35 pounds respectively.

This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however FCI and UKC recognize this dog as pure breed.

Color

The Basset Artesien Normand can be seen in tricolor or fawn and white. If tricolor is present then the head should be largely covered with tan hair and show a circle of darker hairs on temples. The black blanket or patches should be comprised of solid black hairs or black hair with 'grizzle'.

Coat

The coat is short, smooth and close without being too fine. The skin is supple and fine.

Personality

The Basset Artesien Normand is loyal, intelligent, kind and affectionate to its family. Determined and courageous during hunt, the dog is docile and amiable when around its family. Gentle and considerate, it makes a wonderful and trustworthy pet around children. It has a tendency to bark, signalling arrival of an stranger but it welcomes guests after proper socialization. The dog is regarded highly as a companion as well as an excellent hunting dog. This dog has strong scenting sense and can follow an interesting smell to its origin. The dog is accustomed to living in packs and will create no problems with other dogs in the house. It does have a high prey instincts and will need proper training to avoid chasing other pets in the family. The Basset Artesien Normand makes an excellent pet dog besides being a wonderful hunting companion.

Care

Short coat of Basset Artesien Normand does not require much grooming. Brushing once or twice a week will do. The dog needs to be bathe only when necessary. Ears should be checked regularly for infection and toenails should be kept trimmed.

Training

Easily trainable is one of this dog's characteristics. It is eager to please and responsive dog and will respond to gentle yet firm and consistent training.

Activity

The dog needs daily long walks due to its working nature and high energy levels. Care should be taken when outside with this dog as it may take after an interesting smell.
