The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient dog breed that dates back to 2000 years. It is believed that the dog was originated in Persia, now Iran, these hardy workers helped the nomads in cattle and flock herding in the mountain regions from Persia to Europe. Certain of these nomads settled in the mountains and that is where this dog evolved its exceptional problem solving ability. With one man, a few dogs and hundreds of sheep to tend, the dog was required to work on its own and it did!. It had a unique one to one relation with human, the goal of which was to protect the flock. So while the dog took its lead from its master, the execution was left entirely on the dog and it learned to problem solve. Thus the evolution of this highly intelligent breed, the Bergamasco.
The Bergamasco is a medium size dog with height and weight between 21-25 inches and 65-85 pounds respectively. The body is well proportioned and harmonious having a rustic appearance. The dog is powerfully built with a solid, strong and compact body that gives great resistance without compromising on agility and speed of movement.
The Bergamasco sheepdog is recognized by AKC, UKC, FCI and KC.
The colour of the Bergamasco can be black, light grey, fawn and coal. This colour worked as camouflage in the mountain.

The most distinguishing feature of its personality is its intelligence and ability to problem solve. The Bergamasco is very strong, sound and balanced dog. Very attentive and alert to its surrounding, this reserved and peaceful dog takes part in whatever activity is going around it. Non-aggressive in nature, the dog is nevertheless an excellent watch dog as it is alert and aloof with strangers. The dog is extremely patient, kind and tolerant with children. It's friendliness and love for children has earned him a therapy dog status for handicapped children. The dog is not only a good watch dog but also an excellent guard dog and protective of its family and possessions. The Bergamasco is not a dog for every owner as it requires natural leadership in its owner to follow his commands. This dog is not for weak or feeble owners.
The unique coat of the Bergamasco does not require much attention once it has formed mats and flocks.
Though independent in nature, the dog can be trained using gentle methods.
