Breed Details

General

The Bohemian Shepherd is also known as Chodsk� Pes or the Chodenhund. This intelligent and gentle breed has been long used as herding, watch and guard dogs. The dog is now being used for other purposes as well such as guide dog, search and rescue dog and helping dog for handicapped.

This multipurpose dog is medium in size with height and weight between 19-22 inches and 35-55 lbs respectively. The body is very compact and built harmoniously. It closely resembles the German Shepherd and it is believed that the German Shepherd developed from this ancient breed.

A Bohemian Shepherd has a flat skull that tapers slightly to the eyes. The stop is moderately defined. The head is tightly and smoothly covered with skin. The wedge shaped muzzle narrows to a medium sized black nose with well opened nostrils. This breed has dry well fitting lips, strong and long jaws and snow white evenly spaced teeth that meet in a scissor bite. Medium sized eyes are almond shaped and rather obliquely set. Dark brown in color, the eyes have a pleasant expression. Erect small triangular pointed ears are broad based. Ears are densely covered with the hair. The neck that blends smoothly into the withers is elegantly covered with long lush hair. Oval shaped chest is deep, reaching the level of the elbows. The rather short back is straight. The short smooth loin is in a straight line with the back. The long well furred tail usually hangs down whether the dog is at rest or on the move. The dog has a double coat that is water resistant and comes in two colours, black or tan.

The Bohemian Shepherd is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

The Bohemian Shepherd dog is mostly found in two colours; black and tan.

Coat

The dog sports water-resistant double coat that is long and straight while the under coat is soft and dense and keeps the dog safe from cold weather.

Personality

An exceptionally gifted breed, the Bohemian Shepherd is a multi-utility dog that has great potential to be an excellent family pet. The dog is energetic, intelligent and fast learner with an even temperament and can be a great family companion and helping dog for the handicapped. Very friendly and playful, the dog is an excellent playmate for children and gets along well with other dogs and pets in the family due to its friendly and outgoing nature. The Bohemian Shepherd is instinctively alert and attentive to its surrounding and wary of strangers. It has excellent guard and watch dog capabilities and makes a very good watch and guard dog. It enjoys in the company of its family. Very human oriented, the dog is very suitable companion. Socialization and obedience training is must for this dog and it requires a firm yet gentle owner who can win trust of the dog and establish himself as pack leader. The Bohemian Shepherd is an excellent family and multipurpose dog.

Care

The long coat is surprisingly low maintenance. It would only need weekly brushing. Bathe only when necessary.

Training

This eager to please and obedient dog is rather easy to train. It responds well to gentle and innovative training sessions. The dog craves for praise and will thrive on right training techniques.

Activity

The Bohemian Shepherd is an active and very energetic dog breed that has high exercise demands. This dog can live in an apartment as long as it is given proper exercising opportunities.
