General
The Great Bernese is a mix between a Bernese Mountain and a Great Pyrenees purebreds. They are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds. These hybrids display features and characteristics of both parent breeds. The Great Bernese is found in different colours and their coat can be a mix of two parent breed coats.
The Great Bernese is a large size dog, standing up to 32 inches and weighing in between 80 to 120 pounds. These dogs are alert, loyal and social. They get along very well with children.
Color
The Great Bernese is found in different colours like black, brown, gray, red and white or a mix of these colours.
Coat
The double coat of this large dog is weather-resistant, dense, thick, long and rough to touch from outside and soft and short from inside.
Personality
The Great Bernese dog loyal, loving, intelligent, alert and devoted to their family. These dogs are friendly and gentle with all family members but wary of strangers, dogs or humans. They are very good and gentle with children and show patience with them. These dogs make great playmate for children but early socialization is necessary. They are also good with other dogs and pets in the family. These large hybrids are social and love to spend time with their family. They, however, need a firm and strong owner to be their packleader otherwise, they have a tendency to become dominant. These dogs are easy to train with firm, gentle and consistent training. The Great Bernese dog is suitable for families with a large house as they like to play in a fenced yard. They may not adopt well to apartment life. These dogs are alert and attentive to their surroundings and will make good watchdogs.
Care
Their coat inhibits release of heat from their body so they are suited for cold temperature.
Training
They are intelligent dogs and would be easy to train as long as the owner or handler assumes the role of a firm and gentle pack leader, establishing himself as authority figure.
Activity
These dogs are relatively inactive indoors and need large space or yard to play and run. They need fair amount of exercise to relieve their energy.
