General

The Labradoodle Australian comes in three varieties; the Labradoodle Australian bred in Australia with the purpose to convert this cross breed into a pure breed; the Australian Labradoodle bred in USA as a hybrid and the American Labradoodle.

The breed standards for Australian Labradoodle bred in Australia with a purebreed in mind, suggest that the dog should be athletic yet compact with substance and medium boning. The breed should be joyful and energetic when free and quiet and soft when handled. The dog should be gentle and friendly. Head should be broad with well-defined eye-brows. Eyes should be slightly round, large and expressive and should set well apart. Ears should be set flat against head and should not reach below lower lip. Nose should be large, square and fleshy. Body should appear compact with shoulders being slightly angulated and should have strong elbow. Legs should be strong. The dog should appear to be 'going somewhere' when it is trotting and when galloping, flanks should raise up from a deep brisket and well-sprung ribs. The single coat should be 4-6 cm long with straight, wavy or slightly soft curls. The dog can sport one or more of many colours.

This breed can be found in three different sizes including standard with 22-26 inches height and weighing between 45-80 pounds; medium with a height of 18-21 inches and weighing around 28-50 pounds and miniatures ranging in height from 13-17 inches and weighing between 18-40 pounds.

This dog is NOT recognized by AKC however LAA, IALA and DRA recognize it as pure breed.

Color

Accepted colours for this dog are chalk, cream, black, silver, blue, chocolate, cafe, gold, apricot and red. The dog should have a solid colour and no white markings except for small white flash on chest, feet or tail is acceptable.

Coat

The coat of the Labradoodle Australian is no more than 4 to 6 cm long and it can be wavy, straight or slightly spiraled. The coat is neither too thick or dense nor it is fluffy or fuzzy. It is non-shedding and non-odor coat and a blessing for those people who are allergic to dog hair.

Personality

The Australian Labradoodle was never intended to be a hybrid or designer dog by the original breeders. From the beginning, it was purpose bred and developed to be non-shedding, allergy friendly and exquisitely intuitive Therapy and Assistance dog as well as being an easily trained, sociable and non-aggressive family companion. These are the characteristics that make this new breed very popular among dog lovers. The Australian Labradoodle dog is extremely clever, sociable and joyful. Very easy to train, the dog can quickly learn new and unusual tasks. It is a very active and amusing dog that can entertain the whole family with its comical displays. The Australian Labradoodle is non-aggressive and extremely friendly. It gets along well with children and is very kind and considerate towards them. The dog is not shy or timid nor it is suspicious of strangers; it will readily adapt to new environments easily. The properly trained Australian Labradoodle dog proves to be an excellent family companion.

Care

This dog is hypoallergenic and does not shed. Curly coated Australian Labradoodles need regular brushing and clipping atleast twice a year to keep the coat tidy.

Training

The dog is bred to be easily trainable. It is extremely intelligent and willing to learn breed and can quickly learn new skills and tasks easily. Training is not a problem with this dog although the trainer has to display the proper packleader qualities.

Activity

The dog is very active and energetic. It will need not only physical but mental stimulation to keep it happy and occupied. The dog ideally need a large open space to play and run but will do O.K. in an apartment as long as the owner provides it with plentiful exercise. Daily long walks are necessary for this breed.
