General
The Mahratta Greyhound is a medium size compact sighthound originating in Mahratta state of India. This rare breed is best described as resembling smooth-coated Saluki. This is a well-muscled, deep-chested and strong-backed dog that is rare even in its country of origin, India. This medium size dog is valued for its high speed and abilities to course small and medium size game. Its ancestry is uncertain but its smaller size in relation to other Indian dogs and resemblance with the Saluki advocates that this dog is either a descendent of the Saluki or it has a pure ancient origin.
The Mahratta Greyhound has a long and narrow head, large and dark coloured eyes and long, hanging close to the head ears. Muzzle is long and narrow that comes with a black or self-coloured nose. Long and muscular neck blends smoothly into well compact body. It has a level top line, deep chest and strong back. Tail is long and feathered. The dog has smooth and silky coat that comes in dark blue and tan colour.
This rare breed is NOT recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

It is known that these dogs are usually seen in dark blue and tan coloring.

Personality
The Mahratta Greyhound is virtually unknown outside its country of origin and rare even in its country. This excellent sighthound is solely kept as a hunting dog and seldom used as a family pet. An able and avid sighthound, the dog has exceptional speed and courage to chase and hunt small and medium size game. The dog uses its excellent eyesight, fleet feet and able muscles to do its hunting job with perfection. It is highly valued for its hunting skills. The dog is exclusively used as a hunter of small and medium size game. It is an energetic and free-spirited breed that should make a good family companion if given a chance. In its country of origin and specially in the area where this dog evolved, keeping a dog solely as a family pet is considered a luxury.
Care
They are very easy to groom. Several brushing and grooming maintenance is required. Bathing should be done when necessary.
Training
They are smart and very easy to train. Early socialization and obedience training is recommended.
Activity
They require a large space and an extremely large amount of physical and mental exercises. They enjoy lots of outdoor activities and would love to be given the proper attention they needed.
