Breed Details
General
The Pointer Bay breed is a cross breed from the German Shorthaired Pointer and Chesapeake Bay Retriever breeds. They are very smart, brave and protective of their family. As a dog with hunting skills, they will need lots of vigorous exercise and play. This breed needs to be owned by an experienced dog owner so proper training and leadership is provided. Otherwise, they can become unbalanced and destructive dogs.
Color
The breed usually comes in black or brown colors but it would greatly depend on their parent's coat color.
Coat
The Pointer Bay's coat is short and pretty thick. Regular brushing should be enough to keep their coat healthy and good looking.
Personality
This breed are very smart and brave dogs. They are easy to train as they are very eager to please their owners. As their parents were bred for hunting, they cannot tolerate pets that aren't a part of the family.
Care
The Pointer Bay breed's Chesapeake Bay Retriever parent/ancestors are prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems. Thus, these will need extra care. Grooming should be done regularly and bathed as needed.
Training
This breed needs a good pack leader or handler. They tend to become the alpha in a pack if owner or handler is not confident enough to lead. Their hunting instincts, as what their ancestors are bred for, should always be satisfied. Make sure that play and training will always hone their hunting skills. Consistent and firm training, never harsh, is best applied.
Activity
The Pointer Bay dogs are very energetic that their exercise will need to be daily and intensely to keep them happy and balanced dogs. Swimming, running and playing can be used for exercise. For a more challenging workout, they can either pull or carry a load while running. They need to be challenged continuously or they will get bored and become destructive.
