Breed Details

The Pom-Silk dog breed is hybrid or designer breed dogs. They are developed from a cross between the Pomeranian and the Silky Terrier breeds. Other names for the Pom-Silk are Silky Pom and Pom Silk.

These dogs are highly intelligent and eager to please their masters making them easy to train. They also make great watchdogs. They get along great with children and other house pets making them suitable as family dogs. Keep this dog content and balanced by providing the proper leadership and this dog will be a delight to live with.

Their straight long coated hair needs tender loving care to keep it looking beautiful and tangle free. Daily combing and brushing with regular bathing should be included with their care routine.

This dog's coat color, being a hybrid dog, would depend on their parent's coat colors. Colors can include Black, Blue, Red, Tan, Orange, White, Cream, Brown, Wolf Sable, Orange Sable, Brindle and Parti-color of White with color markings.

These dogs' straight long coated hair needs extreme attention to care for. It needs daily combing and brushing as they are prone to tangles and mats. Bathing is done regularly and they should be thoroughly dried and warmed immediately after. Coats should be trimmed occasionally. The hair on their knees down is often trimmed short. The hair above the eyes can grow to block their vision. Ensure that their vision is not blocked by either trimming the hair or putting it up on a pony-tail. This dog is an average shedder.

This dog is very courageous, alert and smart. They are affectionate, cheerful, spunky, sociable and they enjoy being close to their owners. These dogs are wonderful as watchdogs. As long as their owners show them proper leadership, they can get along well with kids as well as with other house pets. Given enough exercise with a strong pack leader, this dog can stay content and stable making it a delight to live with them.

The Pom-Silk dogs need careful and regular grooming. Bathing should be done regularly to keep them looking good. It will be a bit tedious for the owner as it requires to be cared for daily. These dogs are generally healthy but their predecessor breeds and parents need to be looked up for health issues they encountered. Some of these health issues are patellar luxation, intervertebral disc disease, elbow dysplasia, Legg-Perthes, diabetes, epilepsy, tracheal collapse, heart problems, slipped stifle, skin irritations, eye infections, tooth decay and tooth loss. Regular visits to the vet should be done to be able to catch these issues early for treatment.

These dogs need a firm and consistent pack leader to show them proper leadership, discipline and structure that all dogs instinctively need. They need to be properly socialized early in life so they won't chase after other house pets. They are intelligent dogs and needs only straight-forward training as they enjoy learning.

The Pom-Silks are very suitable for apartment or small space living. These dogs are active indoors and they should be fine without a yard to run around; however, they still need their long daily walks. Draining their energy should keep them content, stable and well-balanced dogs.
