Breed Details

General

The Pomerat is also known as the Pomerat Terrier. It is not a pure breed dog but rather called hybrid or designer breeds. These dogs were developed from a mix of the Pomeranian and Rat Terrier hybrid dogs.

This dog is highly active in nature influenced by their Rat Terrier line. Generally energetic, loving, playful and friendly this makes them a delight to be with the family. They make great watchdogs despite their small size.

Color

This dog's colors can come from a variety of colors. Although a combination of colors from its parents will have a great effect.

Coat

As a hybrid dog, their coat features will significantly depend on which genes have greatly impacted the dog. Either it will inherit a shorter coat than the Pomeranian or a longer coat of the Rat Terrier.

Personality

The Pomerats are lively dogs in nature. They are very energetic, friendly, loving and playful. Make sure that this dog does not develop the Small Dog Syndrome where the dog thinks that they need to take over their household. A human pack leader who is strong, firm and consistent should correct this to ensure that behavioral problems do not develop.

Care

This dog should be groomed regularly. The frequency, as it is a designer breed, will greatly depend on which length of coat they have inherited from their parents/predecessors. Bathing and dry shampooing should be done only when necessary. Keep their face and teeth clean to keep their hygiene on top shape. Their toe nails also needs regular clipping.

Training

These dogs are eager to please, very bright and pick up training faster than most dogs. This makes them easy to train as they are also very eager to learn. Although housebreaking could be a challenge for this small dog, they have Rat Terrier qualities that makes them wonderful farm and working dogs.

Activity

This dog needs plenty of exercise as a dog that has a lot of energy to drain. Although they can be fine in a small apartment or a farm setting, they still need to fulfill their primal instinct to walk. They may tend to dig so a securely fenced yard should make it safer for them to play around.
