Breed Details
General
The Poo-Ton dog breed is not a purely bred dog. They are developed from mixing half Poodle and half Coton de Tulear breeds. They are also known as Coton Poo.
This dog has medium length cotton-like hair that is not wiry inherited from their Coton de Tulear line. They have short tails. They look so much like their Coton de Tulear predecessor only that their tails are shorter and often come in multicolor.
The Poo-Tons are very friendly and playful in nature that needs daily exercise to drain their energy. They make great family dogs. As a result of a breed mixed with the Poodle breed, this dog is hypoallergenic which makes them very suitable for people with allergy issues or people who does not want to deal with dog hair.
Color
These dogs' coat color can be a mix of all colors of the Poodle and Coton de Tulear breeds.
Coat
This dog's coat is long and light-textured. It requires detailed grooming everyday which also requires a lot of patience on the owner's part. The dead hair needs to be brushed and combed out to keep them looking beautiful and matt-free. Suitable for families with allergy issues, they shed very little to none. A hypoallergenic dog is usually the result for crossing the Poodle breed to another breed. Clipping their coat should be done occasionally. Much more frequently, if they are going to be shown.
Personality
This dog is naturally playful and friendly. They make wonderful family dogs as they get along very well with children and other dogs. They are also very loving and sociable. Keep these dogs happy, content and balanced by providing them proper leadership and they will prove to be their delightful selves.
Care
These dogs' light-textured long hair demands a detailed grooming everyday. Bathing should be done only when it is necessary. Clean their face and ears daily to avoid staining. Brushing their teeth at least weekly and regular visits to the vet for oral check-ups should keep their teeth healthy. Nails and hair coat should be clipped occasionally. Grooming would be more demanding if the dog is going to be shown.
Training
The Poo-Tons are pretty easy to train as they are very intelligent dogs and are eager to please their masters. However, as any small dogs, they can sometimes be difficult to housebreak. Socialization must be a part of this dog's training as they could play rough if they are not properly socialized. Make sure that these dogs do not develop the Small Dog Syndrome where the dog thinks that they need to stand up and lead their household. When they feel that nobody is filling up that position, they will take over. Once this happens, the dog will develop behavioral problems where he can be destructive. A calm assertive human should show him proper leadership and correct this behavior to keep the household a delight to live in.
Activity
These dogs need to be taken to their daily walks. Playing can be enough to drain their energy as they are fairly active indoors; however, they still need to satisfy their primal instinct to walk. Suitable for apartment or small space living as long as they regularly go out for walks.
