Breed Details

General

The Pootalian dog breed is not purely bred dogs. They are sometimes called hybrid or designer breed type of dogs. They are developed from the Italian Greyhound and Poodle dog breeds.

As intelligent, fast learners and eager to please dogs, they learn tricks pretty quickly. They are generally loving, friendly and alert. They are also known to be hypoallergenic dogs.

Color

These dog's coat color can come in a variety of colors. This includes Black, White, Gray, Brown, Red, Parti and Brindle.

Coat

The Pootalians coat is wiry and usually stands off. Very simple grooming is required for these dogs. Regular light trimming around the face, feet and under the tail is all that is usually required to keep it manageable. Brushing and combing regularly should also keep their coat looking good and tangle free. They shed very little, a trait inherited from their Poodle predecessor.

Personality

This dog is very loving, smart, friendly and alert. They are very eager to please their owners and quick learners that they can easily learn tricks. Some of these dogs do not get along well with kids as the noise and activity could unnerve them. Some can also be very aggressive towards other dogs completely ignoring their opponent's size. Keep this dog in their happy, content and balanced state with enough exercise and proper leadership, this dog will be a delight to live with.

Care

This dog requires very simple grooming because of the wiry stand-off coat. A little trimming around their face, feed and under their tail is all that is generally required. A full coat clipping in the spring can be done once a year. They are pretty easy to groom; however, they can sometimes get fearful when having their feet trimmed. Being patient and gentle will help them overcome this fear. They are very clean animals. Pootalians are generally a healthy dog breed as Poodles are bred to be hunters while Italian Greyhound are runners. If given their normal shots, dental care, exercise, worming and good nutrition plus regular visits to the vet, these dogs will live to a considerable dog age.

Training

The Pootalians should be trained by a firm, consistent handler as they are very intelligent dogs and are eager to please their masters. The training should be challenging enough to keep them interested in the activity; otherwise, they could get bored.

Activity

These dogs are ideal indoor dogs as their short wiry coats do not go well with extremely hot or cold weather. They need a lot of exercise. Keep them on regular long walks, jogs, biking and rollerbladding to provide them with enough exercise to drain their energy. Some owners use a treadmill during the winter to avoid them from going outdoors.
