General
The Saint Bernewfie is a mix between a purebred Saint Bernard and a purebred Newfoundland. The resulting dogs are called hybrid dogs due to their origination from two different pure breeds.
These dogs are large in size with an average weight and height of 100-200 pounds and 26-29 inches respectively. Their big size makes them a terror for strangers or intruders but by nature these dogs can be easily labelled as gentle giants. With an outstanding temperament and very friendly nature, these dogs are no threat to their family or harmless strangers. They are protective and brave when needed.
The Saint Bernewfie dogs are very sweet, loving, caring, obedient, intelligent and eager to please. They like to spend more time with their family than alone. They are very patient as well as playful with children and generally get along well with other dogs and pets in the family although early age socialization and obedience training is a must. These dogs should be trained from beginning to obey their master as it will become difficult for even an strong adult to control them when they are mature.
These dogs are good watch dogs. They may not be very active like some of the other dogs but they do need fair amount of physical and mental activity to satisfy their working nature. These dogs can fit into apartment life if their exercise needs are met. They are very loving and sweet dogs to have as family pets.
Color
These dogs are found in many colours. Most common colour is black but they can also be found in brown, gray, red and white.
Coat
The Saint Bernewfie can have two types of coats. One is smooth coat and the other is rough, coarse, oily and water-repellent.
Personality
The Saint Bernewfie dogs are extremely sweet and gentle in nature. They are very kind and patient as well as playful with children. They love to be around their family and are eager to please. They are intelligent and can learn fast. They get along well with other dogs and pets in the family with proper early age socialization. These dogs are alert and will signal arrival of an stranger. They are gentle and non aggressive to un suspected guests. They are very social and will adapt to different surroundings. These dogs are protective of their family and show bravery when needed. They are not very active but do require daily mental and physical activities. The Saint Bernewfie dogs are great dogs to have as family pets due to their loving and gentle nature.
Care
These dogs should be trained Not To Jump on humans and specially children as they may cause injury due to their massive size. Their coat requires daily to weekly brushing depending upon coat type. Brushing the coat with hard bristle brush will clean the debris and any tangles. Bath should be given when absolutely necessary as it may strip the coat of its shine and oil. Instead dry shampoo these dogs unless the need to bath them is absolutely necessary.
Training
The Saint Bernewfie dogs are intelligent enough to learn quickly however they may occasionally show stubbornness. They would need a calm but confident and consistent trainer. Training should be given using mild training methods.
Activity
These dogs will need daily walk to satisfy their primal need to walk. They are not very active dogs but do need physical and mental activity to keep them from boredom.
