General

The Slovensky Cuvac is a large size flock guardian breed originating in Slovakia. Also known by other names such as Slovak Cuvac, Slovakian Chuvach, Tatransky Cuvac and Slovensky Kuvac, the Slovensky Cuvac is not only valued for its impressive appearance and guarding skills, but it is also praised and appreciated for its sweet nature and even temperament by its owners.

This ancient breed is believed to have originated from arctic wolves. Their presence has been confirmed in the pre-ice age era through remains of these dogs. It has been confirmed through pre-ice age remains that these dogs were present at that time though first documentary evidences are found in 17th century. Once of utmost importance to mountain people for herding and guarding purposes, these dogs fell to disuse due to diminishing predator wolves and introduction of new herding methods. This breed was revived by Dr. Antonin Hruza who set up a strict breeding program for this wonderful breed.

This powerful and well balanced dog comes with a wolf-like head, broad and flat skull and broad muzzle that tapers slightly towards black nose. Oval shaped expressive eyes are dark brown in colour. Moderate ears are set high and hanging. Powerful neck is carried high. This breed has a rectangular shaped body that comes with deep and broad chest with well sprung ribs, medium length straight back, moderately arched loin and slight tuck up.

The Slovensky Cuvac is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI and UKC.

Color

This breed always comes in shepherd favorite WHITE color that helps discern the dog from wolves who normally attack at night.

Coat

The dog comes with a double coat. The outer coat is dense and wavy and longer while undercoat is fine and dense. Face and front legs are covered by short hair while longer hair cover rest of the body. Male dogs have a distinct mane .

Personality

The Slovensky Cuvac is an agile and very alert guardian of the flock but when it is assigned the role of a family pet, the dog shows its loving and boundlessly faithful nature. This is a very affectionate and human oriented breed that will bond strongly with its family. This dog loves children and will thrive in their companionship. The Slovensky Cuvac will make an excellent playmate and protector of kids. It is very tolerant of rough handling by children but may not show same tolerance towards other dogs if it is not raised with them. It is known for its alert, undaunted nature and natural protective instincts. As such, this dog will make an excellent watch and guard dog. Protecting their family, flock and property is the goal of this dog. Though obedient and affectionate, this dog does have a stubborn nature and needs proper training. It also needs a yard atleast to expel its high energy levels though the best setting for this dog will be on a farm where it will have opportunity to take care of livestock, children and family. The Slovensky Cuvac is an excellent family pet when its exercise needs are fulfilled properly.

Care

This dog needs extensive coat care with daily brushing to keep the very thick coat clean and in top condition. The Slovensky Cuvac is a heavy shedder. During spring shedding season, the dog will need to be bathed frequently.

Training

The Slovensky Cuvac has an independent and sometimes stubborn nature. It will need a strong, experienced, firm and confident packleader who understands this dogs behavior. Not a breed for first time or weak owners, the Slovensky Cuvac will deliver best results with positive, firm yet gentle and consistent training.

Activity

With high energy levels, this energetic and very lively dog needs atleast a yard to play and run besides daily long walks. Ideally, the dog will be best suited to farm life. This breed is definitely not for apartment dwellers.
