Breed Details
General
The Srpski Trobojni Gonic is translated to Serbian Tricolor Hound. It is a medium size scenthound originating in Serbia. Formerly known as Yugoslavian Tricolor Hound, the dog was once considered a variation of Serbian Hound but was recognized as separate breed by FCI in 1961. It is a popular dog in its country of origin, Serbia, where it is used to hunt wild boar, feral pigs and other large game as well as on hares and foxes.
This ancient breed is not only valued for its exceptional hunting abilities but also adored for its loyalty and loving nature. This medium size dog, which stands between 18-22 inches and weighs about 44-55 lbs, comes with a slightly rounded skull and well developed muzzle with well developed black nose. The medium size, almond shaped eyes are preferred to be as dark in colour as possible. Medium length, high set, pendulous ears hang close to the cheek. The neck is strong and slightly arched. The rectangular body has a straight top line and well-muscled, strong back. The short, abundant coat has shining hair and comes in deep red base color, black mantle and white star on head and blaze.
This breed is NOT recognized by AKC however it is recognized by FCI.
Color
The base coat is deep red or foxy red with a black mantle or saddle. The black can go up as far as the head where it forms black marks on the temples. The white star on the head and the blaze which stretches down the muzzle form a complete or partial collar under and around the neck. A white mark is allowed on the chest and may extend as far as the tip of the breast-bone and reach the belly and inside of the legs .The end of the tail can be white. White must not make up more than one third of the total body surface.
Coat
The STH comes with short but abundant coat that is shiny and distributed all over the body. A well developed undercoat is also present. Coat hair are slightly longer over back of thighs and underside of tail.
Personality
The Srpski Trobojni Gonic or STH is not only a valuable hunter but its loving, kind and even temperament makes it a great family companion as well. This dog is tenacious hunter when in the field but calm and relaxed when in the house. It is leery of strangers and will announce their arrival, thus making a good watchdog. This breed is playful and gentle with children and can get along with other dogs if properly socialized from young age. This dog does have the tendency to chase after non-canine small pets due to high prey drive and should not be trusted around them. It has high exercise needs and will need to be taken for daily walks and playing opportunities. This dog will need a firm and experienced handler to train it as it has somewhat independent nature. A Serbian Tricolour Hound makes an excellent family pet with proper training and socialization with different people, places, dogs and sounds.
Care
The short coat of STH should not need extensive grooming. It should be brushed occasionally, once or twice a week to remove dead hair. A thorough rubdown with a wet chamois will enhance natural shine of the coat. Bathe only when necessary.
Training
The STH has somewhat independent nature and it will require a firm and experienced owner to train. Positive and consistent training would yield desired results.
Activity
This breed is a working dog with high energy levels. The dog needs lots of physical and mental stimulation. It is best suited in a house with medium size yard where the dog can play and run at will. Daily walking is must.
