Carnitine Deficiency in Dogs

L-carnitine acts as a transport for fatty acids that are essential for the cellular production of energy. L-carnitine is important for muscle tissue to receive energy and function normally and therefore a deficiency can cause a variety of conditions specially heart diseases. Carnitine supplements may not always be able to significantly reverse the effects of this deficiency but they are the best course of treatment. Symptoms may include heart muscle failure, enlarged heart, muscle pain, weakness and exercise intolerance.
