Lack of Bowel Control in Dogs

Fecal incontinence is the inability of a dog to control its bowel movements. This condition occurs when there is a laxity in the muscles of the rectum or colon. The condition is very distressing for both dog and the owner. There are several causes for this condition including injury to the spine or tail, anal gland disease(s), and/or an intestinal disorder.

Common symptoms associated with fecal incontinence include

Scooting on floor – may indicate a condition involving the anal sacs/glands

Defecating in atypical areas (i.e., inside the home)

Bloated abdomen

Tenderness or aversion to being touched near tail, loss of tone and voluntary movement of the tail
