Meninges refers to system of layers (dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater) which envelops the nervous system. Inflammation of this system is known as meningitis. When the inflammation occurs in meninges and brain, it is known as meningoenciphalitis while inflammation of meninges and spinal cord is called meningomyelitis. Hence
Meningitis is the inflammation of the meninges
Meningoencephalitis is the inflammation of the meninges and brain
Meningomyelitis is the inflammation of the meninges and spinal cord
The inflammation of the meninges leads to secondary inflammation of brain and/or spinal cord, resulting in various neurological problems. It can also lead to obstruction of flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) – the protective and nourishing fluid that circulates around the brain and spinal cord – which, consequently, leads to accumulation of CFS and causes severe complications like seizures or paresis.
Symptoms associated with Meningitis, Meningoencephalitis and Meningomyelitis include impaired movement, altered mental state and seizures. Other more common symptoms include
Depression
Shock
Low blood pressure
Fever
Vomiting
Abnormal increase in sensitivity to various stimuli (hyperesthesia)
