The dog is demonstrating an unusually high level of thirst. Excessive thirst leading to high water intake usually in turn leads to polyuria, (high urine discharge). Polydipsia and polyuria are early signs of several diseases, including: Kidney malfunction or failure, Diabetes mellitus, Uterine infection (pyometra), Liver disease, High blood calcium, abnormalities of the pituitary gland etc.
