The Continental Bulldog is the result of an attempt to re-create the original English Bulldog. It was developed by David Leaveitt by crossing Olde English Bulldogge. This breed came into existence due to a law in European convention for breeding and Swiss laws for animal protection that forbid 'the production and keeping of animals with certain characteristics especially anomalies in build and behavior'. Thus many breeds are engendered. The Central Committee of the Swiss Kennel Club decided in 2000 to agree to a breeding program for the improvement of health situation of English Bulldog and gave permission to Bulldog breeder to cross English Bulldog with Olde English Bulldogge and Victorian Bulldog. The aim was to produce a medium sized bulldog that meets all the requirements of the new animal protection laws. The result of this breeding program led to a new dog that was healthier new breed that comes very close to the original Bulldog type. This dog was given name "the Continental Bulldog" to distinguish it from other bulldog breeds.
The dog stands between 16-18 inches and weighs between 35 to 55 pounds depending on height. This new dog breed is smooth-coated, squarely built and medium size athletic dog that has staying power, agility and noiseless breathing. The dog has square head with a flat forehead, wrinkles are present but not too distinct. Black nose has wide and bid nostrils with broad nose tip. Muzzle is broad and square with skins folds on both sides of the straight nose ridge. Eyes are round and set wide apart while rose shaped or folding ears are set high, small and thin. Neck is short and strong. Body is square and compact. Tail is set as deep as possible, strong; thick at the root and tapering off continuously, thickly coated but devoid of fringe. The double coat is short, close, flat and glossy with undercoat short and fine. It can come in almost all colours and patterns.
