Believed to be true descendents of Celtic Hounds, the Tyroler Bracke is a medium size scenthound that originated in Austria. Also known as Tinolen Bracke, Tyrolean Hound and Austrian Brachet, this breed was developed in 1860 as a hunting dog that could hunt in high altitudes of Austrian Mountain. It is an specialized hunter on hares, foxes and other small game but it is very highly valued by Austrain hunters for being an excellent Nachsuchenhund ? a hunting dog that is utilized to find wounded or sick deer. This ultimate hunter normally hunts alone with an excellent direction sense. It consistently gives tongue to keep its master alert and aware.
The Tyroler Bracke is a medium size dog that stands between 16-21 inches and weighs about 33-48 lbs. It has a strong, athletic and slightly elongated body with a straight topline. The head is broad and large but in proportion to the body. Broad flat ears set high on the head. Large eyes are dark brown in colour. Well balanced body has moderate loin, moderately broad but very deep chest, well rounded forechest and slightly tucked-up belly. Thick double coat of this breed should be hard to the touch and be bristly in appearance. It comes in either red or black and tan colouring.
